April Fools UFO cause panic

(April 6, 2010) The Associated Press today reported that a Jordanian newspaper article meant to be an April Fools joke sparked panic in Amman. The article, published in Al Ghad, told of a UFO landing near the town of Jafr. The UFO was allegedly a flying saucer used to transport 10-foot extraterrestrials. It was described as lighting up the whole town and disrupting communications.

The mayor of Jafr, Mohammed Mleihan, sent security forces to look for the extraterrestrials. He said that he was about to evacuate Jafr's 13,000 residents who were frightened that "aliens would attack them". Mleihan considered suing Al Ghad but its managing editor Moussa Barhoumeh apologized saying "We meant to entertain, not scare people".

This incident recalls Orson Welles' radio adaptation of H. G. Wells' classic science-fiction novel The War of Worlds which was broadcast on October 30, 1938 and caused a similar panic in the United States.

UFOs attack sheep

Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England
(April 6, 2010) Telegraph.co.uk today reported of cattle mutilations near Shrewsbury in England. Farmers say that orange lights from unidentified flying objects emitted lasers that attacked sheep and removed their eyes and brains.

The farmers added that "neat holes" marked spots where the organs were taken. Phil Hoyle, a UFO researcher, noted a 50-mile wide corridor between Shrewsbury and Powys where unidentified flying objects were said to wander. He and 15 members of the Animal Pathology Unit supposedly saw a orange light as they were working last month at a Welsh hill farm near Radnor Forest. He surmised that the lasers used in the cattle mutilations were not man-made and compared the UFO sightings to a "Star Wars battle".

Gold Coast UFOs

UFO witnesses John and Pat Gatward
(April 6, 2010) Gold Coast Bulletin News reported that the area has the second highest number of sightings of unidentified flying objects in a year; ranking second to Brisbane in UFO Research Queensland's (URQ) records. From October 2008 to September 2009, the Gold Coast tallied 25 sightings out of URQ's total of 123 while Brisbane had 28.

UFO reports were previously archived by the Australian Air Force; a task they've discontinued in the 1990s. Local police and civilian groups were left to report UFO sightings which ranged from strange lights to mysterious-looking crafts. Sheryl Gottschall, president of URQ, suggested that the Gold Coast's geography and status as a tourist spot make it a likely place for UFO sightings.

The latest UFO witnesses were Pat Gatward and her husband John who saw four orange lights in the sky at around 6:20 PM. Mrs. Gatward said the lights weren't fireworks and she was not sure whether or not they were of extraterrestrial origin.

UFOs appear in radar

Images by the Bureau of Meteorology
(April 3, 2010) news.au.com reported that mysterious objects turned up on the Bureau of Meteorology's national radar system. The objects were described as "red stars, rings of fire and white doughnuts". The latter first appeared on January 15 over Kalgoorlie in Western Australia which was followed by the red star over Broome on January 22 and the rings of fire.

The Bureau suggested that the objects might simply be radar interference. Conspiracy theorists claim however that it might be caused by a United States military project dubbed the "High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program" (HAARP). The project involves shooting high frequency radar bursts into the atmosphere to determine their effect on ionospheric particles. While the stated goal of HAARP is to "study the effects of solar flares on radio communications and improve missile detection and navigation systems", conspiracy theorists claim that it is used to alter the weather.

British electrical engineer and crop circle expert Colin Andrews urged Australians to demand an explanation from the Bureau of Meteorology.
